கீழப்பாவூர் - Keelapavoor History

                                           கீழப்பாவூர்  530 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் தென்காசியைத் தலை நகராகக் கொண்டு அரசாண்ட பராக்கிரம பாண்டியன், தென்காசியில் காசி விசுவநாதர் உலகம்மன் ஆலயம் எழுப்பிய வரலாறு நமக்குத் தெரியும். ஆனால் அதற்கும் 200 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, தென்காசிக்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள பாவூரில் மதுரையை ஆண்ட பாண்டிய மன்னர் குலத்துடன் நெருங்கிய உறவு கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு குழுவினர் வாழ்ந்தனர் என்ற வரலாற்றுச் செய்தி நம்மில் பலருக்குத் தெரியாது. இன்று பாவூர் சத்திரம், மேலப்பாவூர், கீழப்பாவூர் என்ற பெயர்களில் அழைக்கப்படும் ஊர்கள் அன்று 'பாகூரான க்ஷத்ரிய சிகாமணி நல்லூர் ' என்றும், 'பாகூரான க்ஷத்ரிய ரக்ஷ் நல்லூர் ' என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டன.


       இவ்வூர்கள் அடங்கிய குறுமறை நாடு என்ற பகுதியே முன்னர்க் குறிப்பிட்ட வீரக்குழுவினரின் நிர்வாகத்தில் அடங்கியிருந்தது. தன்னாட்சி அதிகாரம் படைத்த இக்குழுவினரின் கீழ், தண்டல் நாயகம் செய்வார் என அழைக்கப்பட்ட வரி வசூல் அதிகாரிகள் இருந்தனர்; படை இருந்தது; தந்திரத்தார் எனப்பட்ட படைத் தலைவர் இருந்தனர். கீழப்பாவூரில் திருக்கபாலீச்சுரம் என்ற பெயருடன் திகழ்ந்த சிவன் கோயிலுக்கு இக்குழுவினர் பல கொடைகளைத் தந்தனர். அக்கோயில் தற்போது திருவாலீசுவரர் கோயில் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இக்கோயிலுக்கு மேற்கில் ஓர் ஏரி வெட்டுவித்தும், அருகில் திருமால் கோயில் ஒன்று எழுப்பியும் ஊருக்குப் பெருமை சேர்த்த அவர்கள் போர் முனைக்குச் செல்வதில் மோகம் கொண்டவர்கள் என்ற கருத்தில், முனையெதிர் மோகர் என அழைக்கப்பட்டனர். இப் பெயராலேயே அந்த ஏரியும், திருமால் கோயிலும் முனையெதிர் மோகர்ப் பேரேரி1 என்றும், முனையெதிர் மோகர் விண்ணகர் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டன. முனையெதிர் மோகர் விண்ணகர் பல மாற்றங்களுக்கு ஆளாகி இன்று வெங்கடாசலபதி கோயில் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
               
                  திருவாலீசுவரர் கோயிலிலுள்ள கல்வெட்டுகள் பதின்மூன்றாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சேர்ந்தவை. இக்கல்வெட்டுகளில் முனையெதிர் மோகர் பற்றிய குறிப்புகள் வருகின்றன. வெங்கடாசலபதி கோயிலில் இருந்த மூன்று கல்வெட்டுகள் பற்றிய குறிப்பு 1917ஆம் ஆண்டில் மையத் தொல்லியல் துறையால் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது..


                                   கீழப்பாவூரில், இக்கல்வெட்டுகள் தவிர, பல இடங்களில் கல்வெட்டுத் துண்டுகள் சிதறிக் கிடக்கின்றன. இவை திருமால் கோயிலின் இடிபாடுகளிலிருந்து சேகரிக்கப்பட்டனவாகத் தோன்றுகின்றன. இத்தகைய கற்கள் கொண்டு கட்டப்பட்ட நடைப்பாலம் ஒன்றும், வண்டிகள் செல்வதற்கான பாலம் ஒன்றும், கள ஆய்வில் கண்டறியப்பட்டன. இவற்றின் காலம் பதினான்கு மற்றும் பதினாறாம் நூற்றாண்டாக இருக்கலாம். கி.பி. 1269-70ஆம் ஆண்டைச் சேர்ந்தவையாகக் கருதத்தக்க வெங்கடாசலபதி கோயில் கல்வெட்டுகளால், முனையெதிர் மோகர் எனப்பட்ட இவ்வீரக்குழுவினர், தென்னவன் ஆபத்துதவிகள் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டனர் எனத் தெரிகிறது. தென்னவன் என்பது பாண்டிய மன்னனைக் குறிக்குமாகையால், பாண்டிய மன்னனுக்கு ஆபத்து நேரும் போதெல்லாம் விரைந்து உதவி புரிந்தவர்கள் இவர்கள் என அறியலாம்.

          பாண்டியர் வரலாற்றை ஆய்வு செய்து ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதிய பேராசிரியர் கே.ஏ. நீலகண்ட சாஸ்திரியார் அவர்கள் 3 கி.பி. 14ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் தொடக்கத்தில் தமிழகத்தைச் சுற்றிப் பார்த்த மார்க்கோ போலோ என்ற வெனிஸ் நாட்டுப் பயணி தந்துள்ள சில குறிப்புகளை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார். 'பாண்டிய மன்னனுக்கு மெய்க்காவலராகச் செயற்படும் நிலப்பிரபுக்கள் சிலர் உள்ளனர். மன்னனுடனே உடன் கூட்டமாகச் செல்வது இவர்கள் வழக்கம். இவர்களுக்கென்று சிறப்பான அதிகாரங்கள் வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. பாண்டிய மன்னன் இறந்துவிட்டால் சொர்க்கத்திலும் அவனுடனேயே இருக்க வேண்டுமென்பதற்காக அவன் உடலுக்குத் தீ மூட்டப்படும்போது இவர்கள் தாமும் தீப்பாய்ந்து மடிந்து விடுவார்கள் '. மார்க்கோ போலோவின் இக்குறிப்பு தென்னவன் ஆபத்துதவிகளை சுட்டுகிறது என்பது நீலகண்ட சாஸ்திரியாரின் கருத்தாகும்.

                சோழ நாட்டில், அரச மரபுடன் மண உறவு கொண்டிருந்த விசுவாசம் மிக்க வேளக்காரப்படை போலவே, பாண்டிய மன்னர்பால் விசுவாசம் மிக்கவர்களாயிருந்த இத்தென்னவன் ஆபத்துதவிகள் பற்றிய தடயங்கள் எவையாகிலும் கிடைக்கின்றனவா என்று கீழப்பாவூரில் தேடியபோது, திருவாலீசுவரர் கோயிலுக்கு நேர் வடக்கே ஆபத்துக் காத்த அம்மன் என்ற பெயரில் சிறிய கோயில் ஒன்று இருப்பது தெரிய வந்தது. சுற்றிலும் வயல்வெளிகள் சூழ, கிணற்றின் மோட்டார் அறை போன்ற தோற்றத்தில் அமைந்த சிறிய கோயில் அது. ஆயினும் ஆபத்துக் காத்த அம்மன் என்ற பெயரும், சிவன் கோயிலுக்கு வடக்கில், ஊரின் வடவாயிற் செல்வியாக இத்தெய்வம் எழுந்தருளியிருப்பதும் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்ததால் இக்கோயில் ஆய்வு செய்யப்பட்டது.

                   கோயிலுக்கு வெளியே ஒரு மூலையில் கைகள் சிதைவுற்று, தலையும் தனியாக உடைந்த நிலையில், பழங்காலச் சிற்பம் (காளியின் கற்சிலை) ஒன்று காணப்பட்டது. கோயிலில் பூசை செய்து வரும் வயிராவியை (பண்டாரம் இனத்தவர்) விசாரித்ததில் இத்தெய்வம்தான் ஆபத்து காத்த அம்மன் என்றும், இசுலாமிய மன்னர் படையெடுப்புக் காலத்தில் இச்சிற்பம் உடைக்கப்பட்டதால் அரசி மங்கம்மாள் காலத்தில் (பதினெட்டாம் நூற்றாண்டின் தொடக்கம்) வேறு சிற்பம் செய்து வைக்கப்பட்டது என்றும், அவருடைய காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியில் குடியேறிய வைகைக் கரையாளர் எனப்படும் பிராமணர்கள்தான் இன்றும் இக் கோயிலில் வழிபட்டு வருகின்றனர் என்றும், அப்போதிலிருந்து தமது மூதாதையர் பொறுப்பில் இக்கோயில் இருந்து வருகிறது எனவும் கூறினார்.

                    மங்கம்மாள் காலத்திற்கு முன்னர்  கீழப்பாவூர், குறும்பலாப்பேரி (குறுமறை நாட்டுப் பேரேரி) ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த நாடார் சமூகத்தவர் இக்கோயிலில் வழிபட்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்று தாம் கருதுவதாகவும், இன்றும் திருவிழாக் காலங்களில் குறும்பலாப்பேரி நாடார் சமூகத்தவர் இங்கு வந்து வழிபடுவதாகவும் கூறினார். கோயிலின் உள்ளே, சுவரில், சிற்பத்தொகுதி ஒன்று வைத்துக் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இச்சிற்பத் தொகுதியைக் கன்னிமார் எனத் தவறாகக் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார், வயிராவியார். ஏழுபேர் இச்சிற்பத் தொகுதியில் காணப்படுகின்றனர். அதனால் ஏழு கன்னியர் எனத் தவறாகக் கருதப்பட்டது போலும். இவ் ஏழுபேரும் கையில் ஆயுதம் ஏந்தி நிற்கும் வீரர்கள் ஆவர். இவர்களே தென்னவன் ஆபத்துதவிகள் எனத் தோன்றுகிறது.

                       இச்சிற்பத் தொகுதி, ஆபத்து காத்த அம்மன் சிற்பத்துக்குச் சற்று பிற்பட்ட காலத்தைச் சேர்ந்ததாகும். அதாவது அம்மன் சிற்பத்தைப் பதின்மூன்றாம் நூற்றாண்டின் தொடக்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்தது எனக் கொண்டால், ஆபத்துதவிகள் சிற்பத்தைப் பதினான்காம் நூற்றாண்டின் தொடக்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்ததாகக் கருதலாம். மதுரைப் பாண்டியர்களின் உடன் கூட்டத்தாராகத் திகழ்ந்த உத்தம வீரர்களின் குலதெய்வச் சிற்பம், தான் என்ற முனைப்பை விடுத்துத் தொண்டர்களாகச் செயற்பட்ட அந்த முனையெதிர் மோகர்களின் குழுச் சிற்பம் ஆகியவற்றின் வழி கிடைக்கும் தடயங்கள் தென்காசிப் பாண்டியர் வரலாற்றுக்கே முன்னுரையாக அமையும் ஒரு வீரப்பாயிரம் எனில் அது மிகையாகாது.

பாபநாசம் அணை | காரையார் அணை | மணிமுத்தாறு அணை

பாபநாசம் அணை:

      பாபநாசம் அணை 1942-ஆம் ஆண்டு மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சியில் உள்ள பொதிகை மலையில் கட்டப்பட்டது. இந்த அணை தாமிரபரணி ஆற்றங்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள பாபநாசம் அருவிக்கு மிக அருகாமையில் உள்ளது.

சிவபெருமானும் பார்வதி தேவியும் அகஸ்திய முனிவருக்கு காட்சி தந்து அருளிய இடமாக இது கருதப்படுவதால், இது ஒரு புண்ணிய ஸ்தலமாக திகழ்கிறது. இதற்கு மரியாதை செய்யும் விதமாக இங்கே நிறுவப்பட்டதுதான் அகஸ்தியர் கோயில்.
மலைகளாலும் மரங்களாலும் சூழ்ந்துள்ள இந்த அணையை பார்க்க ஒரு அழகிய ஓவியத்தை போலத்தான் இருக்கும். அதனாலேயே பல சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளை இந்த இடம் ஈர்க்கிறது.

காரையார் அணை:

       முண்டந்துறை புலிகள் காப்பக வட்டாரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள காரையார் அணை அந்த காப்பகத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியே. சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளை மகிழ்விக்க இங்கு படகு சவாரியும் உண்டு.

அரை மணி நேர படகு சவாரி பின்னடை நீரில் பெரிய நீர்வீழ்ச்சியின் சாரல்களுக்கு மத்தியில் நம்மை அழைத்துச் செல்லும். இந்த நீர் வீழ்ச்சியை வானத்தீர்த்தம் என்றழைப்பர்.
இந்த அருவியின் நீரில் மருத்துவ குணநலன்களைக் கொண்ட கனிமங்கள் பலவும் கலந்திருப்பதால் இதுவும் சுற்றலாப் பயணிகளை அதிகளவு ஈர்க்கும். இந்த நீர்த் தேக்கத்தில் பல முதலைகளும் உள்ளன.
மணிமுத்தாறு அணை:
மணிமுத்தாறு அணை மற்றும் அருவி, பொதிகை மலைகளின் அடிவாரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு நீர்த்தேக்கம். இயற்கை வளம் கொண்ட இந்த இடம் வண்ணமயமான அழகை கொண்டுள்ளது.

மேலும் இங்கே மலைகளும், தண்ணீரும், ஆகாயமும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து காணப்படும் அக்காட்சி, அழகுக்கு அழகு சேர்க்கும் விதமாக இருக்கும். மணிமுத்தாறு அருவி, அணையிலிருந்து சிறிது தூரம் தொலைவில் தான் உள்ளது.
இதுவும் அணையின் அழகிற்கு சிறிதும் சளைத்தது அல்ல. இங்கே நீராடவும் செய்து இயற்கை அன்னையின் அழகிடம் நம் மனதை முழுவதுமாக பறிகொடுக்கலாம்.

Palaruvi Waterfalls


Palaruvi waterfall is situated in Thenmala in Kollam district and is near to Tamil Nadu border. It lies in the Thenmala ranges between dense forests and is across the Kallada river. The word meaning of Palaruvi is ‘stream of milk’ and this waterfall is given this name because it looks like a stream of milk. The water falls from a height of 300 ft and forms a small pool at the bottom. 
It is an important tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy taking a dip in this pool. There are separate places for ladies and children. The best time to visit this waterfall is during monsoon season when the water gushes through the hills. The fall gets dried up during summer season. Guards are posted in this area and use of alcohol is prohibited here. This place is protected under the Palaruvi Vana Samrakshana Samiti. 
The water from this falls is believed to have medicinal properties that are able to prevent several diseases because it comes from the forest. Ayurvedic physicians advise their patients to take a dip in this water. The Thenmala ranges offer an adventurous spot for the tourists. People can do trekking from here. It is a great experience and is equally refreshing. 

It is a single drop, horsetail type waterfall with a total height of 91 metres (299 ft)

Thenmala Dam Touriest

                       Thenmala is a tourist place near Punalur town, Kollam district in Kerala. It is located about 72 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 36 km from Tenkasi(Tamilnadu), and about 160 m above sea levelThe first eco tourism project in India is located at Thenmala. The Thenmala dam was built across Kallada River. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies.


            Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of Western Ghats and predominantly a forest area. The famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is the most important ecotourism resource of Thenmala Ecotourism. This Wildlife Sanctuary is of about 100 sq. km. and harbors large varieties of flora and fauna. Thenmala : “Then + Mala” , i.e. in local parlance “Then” means honey and “Mala” means hillock i.e. it mean honey hills. 
The honey collected from Thenmala forest region is of good quality and of high medicinal value because of the unique floristic composition of the forests.

                             This zone accommodates various activities, which favours Ecofriendly General Tourism. Restaurant, Shop court, Amphitheatre etc help the tourists understand the Kerala cusines, Kerala crafts and natural wealth and Kerala’s Art, Culture etc. An open air Musical Dancing Fountain which is considered, as “Natures Dance” is another major attraction here.

                                 A garden comprising of 27 trees associated with the 27 birth stars. You will be blessed to see all the 27 trees planted in the garden. Walk along and get more information on the trees. If interested to purchase a book providing the details of Nakshatravanam titled “Stars & Trees-Trees of the Nakshatravanam” it is available at the facilitation Counter at a cost of Rs.250/-. The book published by Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society with research support from Tropical Botanical garden and Research Institute, Palode. 

 Butterfly Safari
                             An abode of the butterflies in an open ambience. A garden of host plants for the butterfly has been created enabling the large number of butterfly species of the region to thrive. A guided walk (Safari) along the nature trail of the garden will provide the visitor an opportunity to sight the butterflies and to learn about the butterflies.





 Musical Dancing Fountain 
                                      A synchronized rhythmic ballet of water, sound and light located in the natural surroundings. Such a natural ambience is very rare and hence provides a unique and authentic experience.

Courtallam Waterfalls

 Travel facts about Courtallam

               Courtallam is the town situated at an elevation of 160 meters (520 ft) on the Western Ghats in Tiruneveli District in Tamil Nadu. Rivers such as Chittar River, the Manimuthar River, the Pachaiyar River and few such perennial rivers flow in this region and many seasonal rivers are also a part of this town. The place is also known as the spa of South India because of the number of waterfalls and resorts that are present in that area and the place is quite close to the nature and is very pleasing also. According to the 2001 census, Courtallam had a small population of 2368, comprising of 49% of males and 51% of females and also the literacy rate is quite high that is 75% which is even higher than the national literacy rate. The majority of the population is Tamil, though the place is quite near to Kerala. Other than natural beauty the place is also very close to the religious beliefs of the people. Along with the waterfalls there are many temples as well, in the city.


                 The place is famous for its waterfalls; there are nine waterfalls in total. The waterfall sights are extremely beautiful. The town is a paradise for nature lovers. There are also many places that one can explore on his visit to the city. The city has something to offer to everyone who visit it.

 Places to see in and around 

   Courtallam Peraruvi-  This waterfall flows from 130 feet that is 60 meters above the ground level and the bathing in this waterfall is available throughout the day. That means 24 hour bathing is available at this waterfall. Kutraleeshwara Temple is quite close to the Main Falls so as a part of their offerings to the Lord Kutraleeshwara in whose memory the temple is built take a dip in the holy water. This fall is also known as the Main Fall.

 Chitraruvi-  This is the thinner waterfall as compared to the Main Falls. There are naturally separate places for both men and women to take bathe. This waterfall is also known as Small Falls and is located at the side of Main Falls.

 Shenbagadevi-  This waterfall is lead by the Chitraruvi Falls. And it takes 30 minutes trekking to reach this waterfall and this place is generally restricted in peak due to the risk of floods. Nearby there is also a temple named Shenbagadevi temple which is dedicated to Shenabagadevi Amman.


 Thenaruvi-  This is considered to be the first waterfall of this place so the water of it is considered to be pure and pious. And it takes 2 hour trekking to reach this place. This is situated above Shenbagadevi. And even this place is restricted during the peak seasons due to the risk of floods. This waterfall is also known as the Honey Falls.






 Fivefalls- This fall is also known as the Five Falls. This is the most visited waterfall among the others. Here one can enjoy to the fullest along with the crowd while taking bathe in this waterfall. This significance of this waterfall is that while falling the water splits into five branches so the place is known Five Falls.









 Old Courtallam Falls- This waterfall is also known as Old Courtallam Falls. The specialty of this waterfall was that the water used to fall in the valley from between the two rocks. For some time the waterfall was closed and the rocks were broken so as to change the course of water flow. But again once the construction was over the waterfall was again opened.



 Tiger Falls-  This waterfall is also known as Puli Aruvi and is artificially constructed and the water of it is used for irrigation. This waterfall is constructed between the Main Falls and Old Courtallam. As the waterfall is a private property so to take bathe here once has to shell out some money.
            There are many places that one sees that are situated near the Courtallam Tenkasi which is a town situated in the foothills of Western Ghats. Also the temples which are there in this city are very renowned. Not only waterfalls but this place is also famous for its temples. It is a paradise for both nature lovers as well as the religious people.

 Nearest Airport:  The nearest airport that is situated close to the city of Courtallam is the Tuticorin Airport (TCR) and the distance at which this airport is located is 86 Km that is 53 miles.

Tenkasi

Tenkasi ( தென்காசி) is one of the largest municipalities in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil NaduIndia. It is located in the foothills of theWestern Ghats near the Courtallam Waterfalls.Tenkasi is famous for its saaral (சாரல் drizzling). Temple

Tenkasi (South Kasi) is famous for its Ulagamman Temple and its Shiva Temple. The Ulagamman temple was built by Parakrama Pandian, but was shattered by lightning. In the 1990s, the temple was restored with much financial assistance of Sivanthi Adithan and others, and it was given a fresh coat of paint again in 2006 by the same philanthropists. However, the first few feet from the ground has not been painted as that part appears to have survived the lightning. The gopuram or the entry gateway remains among the highest in southern Tamil Nadu.And it is the second highest gopuram in Tamil nadu. The main deity here is Kasi Viswanathar (Shiva). This temple has three Sannidhis [a unique aspect] - Sivan, Amman and Murugan Sannidhis. This temple has beautiful sculptures and also has musical stone pillars, that emit notes of different pitch when tapped with fingers. The entrance is really grand, with heavy steps. One could view the majestic Temple Gopuram even while entering the town. The Gopuram of the temple welcomes pilgrims with a pleasant cool breeze straight from the nearby Thirikooda Malai.
